Shell Soft Rot

Causal organism – Syncephalastrum racemosum

Symptoms:

  • Occurs on matured fruits, leading to rapid rot and rendering the fruit unfit for consumption.
  • Lesions appear as rapidly expanding, water-soaked, light brown patches with dark brown margins and a gelatinous texture.
  • Lesions typically measure 6–8 cm in diameter.
  • The gelatinous layer is easily removable on affected portions.
  • Internally, the rot progresses into the pulp, which becomes colonized by white to black fungal mycelium.
  • The affected fruit produces a foul odour associated with decay.
